Construction began on Francis X. Nava Elementary School in 1968 and was completed in 1969. Veterans’ Organizations in Santa Fe recommended the school be named after Marine Corporal Francis Xavier Nava, the first serviceman from Santa Fe to be killed in the Viet Nam conflict. A display case near the entrance of the school features Nava’s photo and service memorabilia, including his medals.

It is that sense of pride and patriotism that is most visible to visitors upon entering the school. Our core values are deeply rooted in the ideals of Character Counts. Staff, students, parents, and the community at large hold each other accountable for all the pillars of good character, especially Respect and Responsibility.

The instructional team at Francis X. Nava Elementary School is committed to providing a comprehensive curriculum based on state content standards and benchmarks. Students are challenged in the core academic areas, fine and performing arts, physical and mental fitness, extracurricular activities, and social justice, with bi-literate, bicultural, and bilingual competence.

Parents, extended family members, and the community play a key role in developing successful students and productive citizens.
