Kaune Elementary School is nestled in a small neighborhood off of Cerrillos Road. The school was remodeled in 2003, restoring one of the oldest schools in Santa Fe to a modern, warm environment while keeping the historic atmosphere. Kaune is a small school with small classes.
Our primary grades concentrate heavily on language acquisition and reading, while upper grades expand their teaching focus to include more math and science. The entire school is participating in “Read Across America.” Students have been very successful in our chess club; attending state and regional competitions for many years. Science competitions have been part of our sixth grade curriculum.
This year we are taking part in the state-wide mars expedition, M3 Mission, sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory. Our students also build and launch water rockets as the culminating activity in their physical science and astronomy units. We have also fielded a team to participate in “National History Day” competition. Kaune has reading and math support programs that are used by the individual students on computers. Technology is expanding rapidly at Kaune. We have two computer labs to allow easy access to all of our classes, including kindergarten.
With high expectations of every student, Kaune continues to grow and students accomplish more than they had ever dreamed. With the high expectations there is also a feeling a community. As part of something bigger than the individual, we can belong and feel nurtured. |
