E.J. Martinez was the Postmaster of Santa Fe. He served as the President of the School Board for a time. He was an avid gardener, hiker and outdoorsman.
E.J. Martinez Elementary School was constructed in 1959. Since then, there have been two major additions to the building, one in 1969 and one in 1993-4. A major renovation of the two older wings is now underway to bring our facility up to current standards.
The school offers a comprehensive program for students in grades K-6. For our core academics, the school uses state-of-the-art models and programs for instruction. A strong focus in all grades is on mastery of the essential skills of reading, writing across the curriculum, mathematics and critical and creative thinking. Students utilize the essential skills to enhance their knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world and people around them through their studies of science and social studies. In addition to core academics, the program includes art, music and physical education for all students. The school program includes counseling, social work, resource, Title I, bilingual education, gifted education and service learning in the upper grades.
The school is well-integrated with the community. An after-school program serves children from several SFPS from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. Extra-curricular programs include several basketball leagues, wrestling, swimming, and cheer-leading. The facility is also used as a meeting place for several civic organizations.
