Agua Fria Elementary School is a community school located in the heart of the Agua Fria Village. The school’s focus has been to concentrate on curriculum alignment in the areas of math, reading, science and social studies and to improve the academic achievement for all students. Our goal is to drive instruction based on varied student assessments (e.g., Levels/Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), New Mexico Standards-Based Assessments (NMSBA), teacher assessments, etc.). Team planning and professional development are critical components of our Educational Plan for Student Success and our Alternative Governance Plan.
Agua Fria Elementary School instructs students grades Pre-K to sixth grade. We have a model bilingual maintenance program available to students grades PreK-6th grade and a model 90/10 dual language program that is currently serving students K-2. We have a variety of programs at our school such as counseling groups, art, music, PE, Cooking with Kids, and an after school program that serves approximately 150 students. We also have a Family Resource Center that assists families and our school community to help all students achieve their academic potential.
A partnership with a private foundation in Santa Fe has also provided our school with additional assistance that includes volunteers working with students primarily in the area of literacy. The program continues to provide three new books a year for each student to keep and assures that every student in grades 3-6 has an English and Spanish dictionary to use when needed. The partnership for healthy schools which is through the same group also provides funds for a full time physical education teacher, health educator, and administrative assistant to assist with medical referrals to the La Familia Medical Center as needed.
