Under the provisions in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, all school districts, schools, and the state are evaluated for annual Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). AYP represents the annual academic performance targets in reading and mathematics that school districts and schools must meet in order to reach the federally mandated goal of 100% proficiency by 2014. Districts, schools, and the state are required to meet AYP criteria on three measures: academic performance, test participation rates, and either the graduation rate (for high schools and districts) or attendance rate (for elementary and middle/junior high schools).
